Healthy Food for Pregnancy

When you are pregnant your body will experience new sensations and needs never felt before. This is true for several areas, but especially true for your diet.

You want to make sure that you eat only healthy food that will provide your fetus with plenty of nutrients so that it can develop at a normal rate and avoid any potential medical issues.

First of all, there are some myths that need to be dispelled. A lot of pregnant women use their condition as an excuse to gorge on all the treats and snacks that they always wanted. The common line for this reasoning is “I’m eating for two”. Well, the trouble is that they are not. It is true that their body needs more nutrients in this period, but it is nowhere near double what they usually eat.

General consensus states that you should look to consume around 300 more calories and increase up to 500 in the later stages of the pregnancy. Of course, this is only valid if the food you are eating is healthy and nutritious. It is common to get weird cravings during this time, but sticking to a balanced diet is as important now as it ever was.

Due to the nausea and vomiting which are frequent during pregnancy this might seem difficult, but not impossible if you know to eat only healthy food for pregnancy.

Just like most other eating plans, a healthy food pregnancy diet must include fruits and vegetables. These are recommended in general because they are the food group with the most nutrients.

They contain plenty of minerals, vitamins and fiber that get absorbed by your body and provide your fetus with everything it needs to grow up healthy.

The drawback to fruits and vegetables is that many people do not find them particularly filling. This is especially true for pregnant women who will require a lot of food in order to feel satiated. That is why foods rich in carbohydrates should be a core component in every meal.

They satisfy your hunger without being too rich in calories. Such foods include potatoes, cereal, bread, pasta, noodles, rice, yams and oats. If possible, it is recommended that you eat only whole grains instead of white ones since these are healthier and richer in fiber.

You must not forget meat. It is a very important part of a healthy diet as it provides much needed protein. However, not all kinds of meat should be part of a healthy food pregnancy diet. Some of them are too rich in fat and do not contain enough protein to justify the large amount of calories.

You want to stick to fish and chicken for the most part. Other foods where you can get your protein from include eggs, nuts and beans.

You will feel a lot of hunger sensations throughout your pregnancy, even after you just ate. That is why it is also important to snack regularly throughout the day.

However, make sure that all the snacks you eat are healthy food for pregnancy. Some good choices include fruits, veggies, low-fat yoghurt, porridge, fruit juice etc.
