Summer is a time to relax, have fun, and throw caution to the wind. Unfortunately, if you relax and let loose too much with your beauty routine, your appearance and health might suffer. The warmer weather brings its own unique set of beauty challenges and to ensure you look your best all summer long, there are a few things you should do. These must-follow beauty tips for summer keep you looking beautiful no matter the temperature.
Moisturize
Many people slack off on moisturizing their skin when the weather warms up because of sweating. Cold, harsh temperatures and dry air drain the skin of moisture, but there are also warm weather conditions that wreak havoc. Moisturizing your skin is a must year-round. This is especially true if you spend any time in the water or if you are out in the sun. Both have a drying effect on your skin and you must replenish the moisture lost at the end of the day. If you are not in the mood for thick, creamy moisturizers during the warmer weather, try using coconut oil.
Sunscreen
Even more important for your skin than moisturizer is sunscreen. If you will be spending any time at all in the sun, you must protect your skin. The National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health lists exposure to the suns ultraviolet radiation as one of the main causes for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. The risk is further increased for people who have lighter complexions or skin that burns or freckles easily. Though some exposure to sunlight is necessary for our health, you must still protect your skin, especially when you plan to be outdoors during the suns peak hours.
Care for You Hair
Caring for your hair during the summer is easier than most people believe. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to be frustrated by humidity-induced frizz or the stringy look of salt-air blown hair. Instead of resisting the look of carefree summer hair, embrace it. Many people are willing to pay a lot of money for products that duplicate the effortless look of summer hair, so if you happen upon it naturally, enjoy it!
If necessary, use an anti-frizz product or thick conditioner after shampooing your hair. If frizzing is a serious problem, tie your hair back on humid days. This also has a cooling effect, so it might be the most comfortable option.
On days you spend time in a swimming pool, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo that rinses away chlorine buildup. This prevents the chemicals from damaging your hair and for many, it avoids discoloration. Finally, consider a vinegar rinse one a week or so to keep hair silky and smooth.
Avoid Heavy Makeup
If you are accustomed to wearing thick foundation or cover-up, summer is the time to put it aside. Not only is it uncomfortable when the weather is warm and humid, it also tends to clog the pores. Additionally, thick makeup slips away when you sweat.
To avoid problems with makeup, opt for tinted moisturizers or beauty balms in place of our usual foundation. If possible, forgo cream makeup all together and apply a moisturizing sunscreen and powder.
Drink Up
Last but certainly not least, drink plenty of water. This is important all year round, but especially when the weather heats up. The tendency to sweat in warmer, humid weather depletes your body of liquids which you need to replenish throughout the hot summer days. Not only will you feel better, you will maintain your healthy glow, even on the hottest of days.
